Women In Golf

Giving you confidence to thrive on & off the course

At York Golf Club, we believe golf is for everyone - and we're proud to say our Women's section is one of the most successful in the Yorkshire region!

As a proud supporter of the R&A Women in Golf Charter, we are determined to ensure that golf is inclusive for all girls and women of all abilities.

Boasting over 100 active playing members and around 75 social members, we offer a welcoming atmosphere where women can thrive on and off the course.

Sign up for a Membership and you’ll enjoy equal access to all our facilities and events - including friendly competitions and a thriving social scene.

Improve your skills & be competitive

We offer a mix of weekly competitions and social golf events, ensuring there’s something for everyone - whether you love the thrill of competition or enjoy golf as a fun, social activity.

Beyond our club events, members also have the opportunity to take part in external competitions, including those organised by the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association (YLCGA) and the Yorkshire Veteran Ladies Golf Alliance.

For those who are new to golf, our Academy provides a supportive introduction to the game with group coaching, mentoring and on-course playing sessions.

Social Calendar

A wonderful place to connect & have fun

Many of our social members enjoy meeting for coffee or lunch on our Tuesday competition days, and they also take part in the club’s lively social calendar.

Throughout the year, we host quizzes, music nights, bistro evenings and other events to bring members together.

Our social scene doesn’t stop there - we also organise enjoyable competitions, away days at other clubs and a variety of social and charity events.

Frequently Asked Questions

What competitions do you hold for women?

We offer a variety of competitions for women throughout the week. On Tuesdays, there are 9 and 18-hole competitions, while most Sundays feature an 18-hole event, ranging from medals to fun team challenges.

We also run summer and winter knockouts for individuals, pairs, and mixed pairs, providing plenty of opportunities to play and compete.

Every Thursday, we host a relaxed 9-hole roll-up which is open to all members. It’s a great way to enjoy the game, meet fellow golfers, and have fun in a friendly, social atmosphere.

What external events do your women’s team enter?

We currently have 5 teams who compete in YLCGA Inter-Club Matches, a Singles match-play format.

  • Scratch team - members play off scratch - 6 matches
  • 2 A Teams - members up to HI 27.4 - 6 matches
  • B Team - members between HI 18.5 - 36.4 - 6 matches
  • Weekend Team - members up to HI 36.4 - 3 members – 6 matches

The Yorkshire Ladies Veterans Golf Alliance also stages around 10 competitions in variable format during the summer months.

Do you organise any friendlies for the women’s teams?

We organise around 5 matches a year with other clubs in the surrounding area and play either a home or away match of 4BBB (Four Ball Better Ball), a format where two-player teams each play their own ball; the best score counts.

This is to enable new women and higher handicappers to experience playing in a match and at other courses. We try to match a more experienced player with a newer player for a fun day out.

We also have around 6 Mixed Friendly matches a year in various formats, mostly at weekends, again playing either at home or away.

Is there a Winter League for women?

For those wanting to extend the competitive golf season, we take part in 2 Winter golf associations - The York and District Alliance and the East Yorkshire Ladies Winter Golf Association (EYLWGA). These are foursomes competitions occurring once a month during the Winter season. The EYLWGA also holds an annual Pro-Am and mixed foursomes competition.

Can girls play in women’s events?

All our women’s competitions are open to junior girls. In addition, there are regular coaching sessions and competitions for the Juniors section on Sundays and during school holidays.

Do you stage any mixed competitions?

Yes! We hold mixed competitions throughout the year, often on weekends and always on bank holiday weekends. These events are open to all full members and include scrambles and other team formats.

Our fortnightly fun Nine-and-Dine sign-up competition is open to men and women when it is held on Friday summer evenings, playing 9 holes before enjoying a light dinner. We also run several competitions for adults and juniors, providing great opportunities to meet other members or enjoy golf with family and friends.
