York Golf Club has a long-established reputation as one of the leading golf clubs in Yorkshire. The member-owned Club was founded in 1890, with a course laid out by members on the Knavesmire - which today is York’s famous racecourse, often referred to as “the Ascot of the North”.
In 1904 the Club relocated to its present site in the village of Strensall to the North of York, occupying land rented from the Ministry of Defence. In 1997 the land was bought from the MOD, securing the Club’s long-term future.
Today, the Club has a thriving membership, with a very active Men’s section, one of the largest Women's sections in the region, and a vibrant and successful Junior section.
The Club is renowned as one of the best places to play golf in Yorkshire, and has recently completed a course development plan to improve and update every hole, refining the look, feel and challenge of the course.
York Golf Club’s resident Head Professional, Mark Rogers, has been with the club for over 10 years and was voted Foremost Golf’s Professional of the Year in 2015. With a modern approach to coaching, fitting and equipment sales and an extremely well-stocked Pro Shop, Mark and his team are a true asset to the Club, offering a first-class service to all members and visitors.
Our superb Greenkeeping team, led by Course Manager Michael Rogers, work tirelessly in preparing and maintaining our course to the highest of standards. So much so that visitors are regularly overheard describing the course’s condition - in particular our greens - as “the best I’ve played on all year”.
In recent years, the Club has invested in a substantial renovation and refurbishment of our Clubhouse facilities, with major works carried out in the bar, lounge and dining room areas, providing congenial, welcoming surroundings for members and visitors to enjoy refreshments and hospitality after their rounds.
The members, Board of directors and all staff at York Golf Club extend a warm welcome to all golfers, whether potential new members or visiting guests.
